　　　It was late summer in the ninth year of the Bunei era. It should be added here, since it will be important later, that the ninth year of Bunei is 1272 by Western reckoning.
　　　An elderly man and a boy were climbing the hill known as Shojo-ga-take that lies behind the Kenchoji temple in Kamakura. Even during the summer, the man, a handyman at the temple, liked to get the cleaning done in the middle of the day, then, whenever there promised to be a beautiful sunset, to climb to the top of this hill.
　　　The boy was deaf and dumb, and the village children who came to play at the temple always left him out of their games, so the old man, feeling sorry for him, had brought him up there with him.
　　　The old man's name was Anri. He was not very tall, but his eyes were a clear blue. With his large nose and his deep eye sockets, his appearance was different from ordinary people; so the village brats were accustomed to calling him, behind his back, not Anri but "the long-nosed goblin."

　文永九年の晩夏のことである。のちに必要になるので附加えると、文永九年は西暦千二百七十二年である。
　鎌倉建長寺裏の勝上（しょうじょう）ヶ岳（たけ）へ、年老いた寺男と一人の少年が登ってゆく。寺男は夏のあいだも日ざかりに掃除をすまして、夕焼の美しそうな日には、日没前に勝上ヶ岳へ登るのを好んだ。
　少年のほうは、いつも寺へ遊びに来る村童たちから、唖（おし）で聾（つんぼ）のために仲間外れにされているのを、寺男が憐（あわ）れんで、勝上ヶ岳の頂きまでつれてゆくのである。
　寺男の名は安里（アンリ）という。背丈はそう高くないが、澄み切った碧眼（へきがん）をしている。鼻は高く、眼窩（がんか）は深く、一見して常人の人相とはちがっている。そこで村の悪童どもは、蔭（かげ）では安里と呼ばずに、「天狗（てんぐ）」と呼びならわしている。
