カズオ・イシグロのブッカー賞受賞作品で代表作『日の名残り』。下に引用するのは、この小説の最終章、本文の最後から２ページぐらい前の一節。

　男が立ち去ってから二十分ほどになります。私はここに残り、いまの瞬間を——桟橋のあかりが点燈するのを——待っておりました。先ほども申し上げましたが、楽しみを求めてこの桟橋に集まってきた人々が、点燈の瞬間に大きな歓声をあげました。その様子を見ておりますと、あの男の言葉の正しさが実感されます。たしかに、多くの人々にとりまして、夕方は一日でいちばん楽しめる時間なのかもしれません。では、後ろを振り向いてばかりいるのをやめ、もっと前向きになって、残された時間を最大限楽しめという男の忠告にも、同様の真実が含まれているのでしょうか。

　　It is now some twenty minutes since the man left, but I have remained here on this bench to await the event that has just taken place -- namely, the switching on of the pier lights. As I say, the happiness with which the pleasure-seekers gathering on this pier greeted this small event would tend to vouch for the correctness of my companion's words; for a great many people, the evening is the most enjoyable part of the day. Perhaps, then, there is something to his advice that I should cease looking back so much, that I should adopt a more positive outlook and try to make the best of what remains of my day.
