The original text in English

As far as philology was concerned Murray was an autodidact. He had not attended university -- and in any case only University College would have been much use even had he done so -- but his fascination with the dialects of lowland Scotland set him on a path from which he never deviated. Murray perceived that language, unlike the nations that used it, was not tied to physical, political boundaries. The people of Hawrick, just north of the border, spoke in the same way as did those to the south of that linguistically arbitrary line. Language was a whole thing, a continuum, and should be studied as such.
