鼻歌まじりに、オラフ・ジョンスンは、図書室の隅の堂々たる樅（もみ）の木をしげしげとながめ、夢見るように青磁色の瞳をなごませた。図書室はこのドームの中でも最大の部屋だが、オラフの目からすると、クリスマスを祝うにはこれでもまだせまい。彼はわきにおかれた大きな荷箱の中にいそいそと手をつっこみ、赤と緑の二色を使ったクレープペーパーのロールをひとつとりだした。

いったいどういうおセンチな気分にとつぜんとりつかれて、ガニメデ物産がクリスマス・デコレーションの一式をこのドームに送ってよこしたのか、そのあたりをせんさくする気はなかった。オラフは穏やかな気性なので、自分から買って出たクリスマス飾りつけ主任の仕事にけっこう満足していた。

オラフ・ジョンスンは鼻歌を歌いながら、青磁色の眼をうっとりさせ、図書室の隅（すみ）にある立派な樅（もみ）の木をためつすがめつ見ていた。図書室はドームのなかでも最大の部屋だったが、オラフはその時それほど広くは感じなかった。夢中になって、彼はそばの大きな木箱に手を突っこむと、赤と緑のクレープ・ペーパーを一巻き取り出した。

いったいどんな風の吹きまわしで、ガニメデ物産がクリスマス用の装飾セットを、このドームに送ってきたのか、すぐにでも訊（き）いてみたかった。オラフは落ち着いた性格で、クリスマスの飾りつけの責任者としての仕事を進んで行ない、それに満足していた。

Olaf Johnson se distraía canturreando con acento nasal y contemplaba el majestuoso abeto del ángulo de la biblioteca con una expresión soñadora en la porcelana azul de sus ojos. Aunque la biblioteca era la habitación más espaciosa de la Cúpula. Olaf no consideraba que le sobrase ni un palmo de terreno en aquella ocasión. Entusiasmado, hundió la mano en la enorme canasta que tenia al lado y sacó el primer rollo de papel rugoso encarnado y verde.

No se había detenido a indagar cuál había sido el impulso sentimental que impulsó a la Compañía Ganimediana a enviar una colección completa de adornos de Navidad a la Cúpula. Olaf era hombre de temperamento plácido; realizaba la tarea que se había impuesto él mismo de decorador navideño en jefe y estaba contento de su suerte.

Olaf Johnson hummed nasally to himself and his china-blue eyes were dreamy as he surveyed the stately fir tree in the corner of the library. Though the library was the largest single room in the Dome, Olaf felt it none too spacious for the occasion. Enthusiastically he dipped into the huge crate at his side and took out the first roll of red-and-green crepe paper.

What sudden burst of sentiment had inspired the Ganymedan Products Corporation, Inc. to ship a complete collection of Christmas decorations to the Dome, he did not pause to inquire. Olaf’s was a placid disposition, and in his self-imposed job as chief Christmas decorator, he was content with his lot.
