The Son of the Chimera (from Pereat Mundus) by Leena Krohn レーナ・クルーン（『ペレート・ムンドゥス』より）「キメラの子」

■はじめに Introduction

再生医療やクローン技術など、生命科学は日々、進歩している。もしあなたの父親が、チンパンジーとオオカミとヤギと人間のハイブリッド（混合種）だとしたらどうだろう？

そんな小説を書いた人がいる。レーナ・クルーン (1947- ) というフィンランドの女性作家。邦訳はこれまでに5、6冊出ている。著書『ペレート・ムンドゥス』の裏表紙折り返しには「現代フィンランド文学を代表する作家の一人」と紹介されている。

叙事詩『カレワラ』を読んでいないわたしにとっては、トーベ・ヤンソンのムーミン・シリーズ以来はじめて接するフィンランド文学の作品だ。もっとも、トーべ・ヤンソンはスウェーデン系フィンランド人なので作品はスウェーデン語で書いた。だから「フィンランド語」作家としては、レーナ・クルーンがわたしにとって初めての人ということになる。

わたしが生まれたのは、だれが望んだからでもない。生まれることが可能だということすら、だれも知らなかった。なぜなら、わたしの母は人間、父はキメラだったから。父は複合交配種としては草分けの部類に属する個体だった。

父の姿を写したものは一枚しか残っていない。写真ではなくて水彩画で、母が描いたものだ。絵のなかで父は肘掛け椅子に座っている。片手に本を持ち、両方のひづめをそっと重ねている。母によれば、父は挿絵つきの本をパラパラとめくるのが好きだったという。といっても、字は読めなかったそうだ。エレガントな淡い青色のスーツの上衣を着ているが、ズボンは穿いていない。力強い脚は腿（もも）からひづめまで灰色の毛でびっしりと覆われている。突き出た額には小さな両角が優美に弧を描いている。顔でとくに目立つのは、丸くて黄色い両眼と、とてつもなく横長の口と、小さな顎（あご）と、ばかでかい、しかし平べったい鼻だった。［以下略］

　　　下の末延氏の邦訳はあえて参照せずに、英訳だけを見てつくった拙訳。
　　　フィンランド語の原文に、はたしてどこまで忠実な訳になっているかは
　　　わからない。が、日本語としての自然さでは末延氏の訳に到底及ばない。

この世に生まれたけれども誰のためでもない。こんなことができるなんて、誰も思ってもいなかった。だって、母親は人間で、父親はキメラなんだ。父は、多種をかけあわせた初期の混合種だった。

父親といっても、絵が一枚残っているだけで、しかも写真ではなく母親が描いた水彩画だ。本を手に肘かけ椅子に座っている父は、しなやかに偶蹄（ぐうてい）を組んでいる。母の話では、字は読めなかったけれど絵本が好きで見ていたらしい。仄かに青みがかった上品な上着だけをはおり、ズボンは履いていない。冷ややかな毛皮がたくましい肢を蹄の先まで覆っていた。ちょこんと突き出た角が、でっぱった額を覆うように優雅にカーブし、顔には——と言うより、顔面には——くりっとした黄色い目に、異様なほどのっぺりとした口、あるようでなさそうな下顎に巨大なぺちゃんこ鼻。［以下略］

■フランス語訳 Translation into French

Je suis né, mais personne ne l'a voulu. Personne n'imaginait même que ce soit possible, car ma mère était une femme et mon père une chimère. Il était l'un des premiers hybrides issus de plusieurs espèces.

De lui, il n'existe qu'un portrait, pas même une photo, juste une aquarelle peinte par ma mère. Mon père y est assis dans un fauteuil, un livre à la main, un sabot gracieusement croisé sur l'autre. Il aimait, au dire de ma mère, à feuilleter des albums illustrés, bien qu'il n'est jamais appris à lire. Il est vêtu d'un élégant veston bleu nuit, mais ne porte pas de pantalon. Une toison gris argenté recouvre ses fortes jambes jusqu'aux sabots. De charmantes petites cornes pointent sur son front bombé. Le plus frappant, dans son visage - ou plus exactement sa face -, ce sont ses yeux ronds et jaunes, sa bouche d'une largeur démesurée, son menton quasi inexistant et son nez étonnamment grand mais plat. I was born, but not because anyone wanted it to happen. No one even knew it was possible, for my mother was a human being, my father a chimera. He was one of the first multi-species hybrids.

Only one picture of my father survives. It is not a photograph, but a water-colour, painted by my mother. My father is sitting in an armchair, book in hand, one cloven hoof placed delicately on top of the other. According to my mother, he liked to leaf through illustrated books, although he never learned to read. He is wearing an elegant, muted blue suit jacket, but no trousers at all. Thick grey fur covers his strong legs, right down to his hoofs. Small horns curve gracefully over his convex forehead. Striking in his face are his round, yellow eyes, his extraordinarily wide mouth, his tiny chin and his surprisingly large but flat nose. [Omission}
