古代インドの標準的な水時計はガーティと呼ばれる。いちばん簡単な形のガーティは真ん中に小さな穴をあけた二つ割りのココナッツの殻で、水を満たした鉢にそれを浮かべる。穴から水がゆっくりと入ってきて、やがて殻は水中に沈む。インドの寺院で僧侶たちが使っていたのは、ココナッツの殻ではなく、直径２０cmほどの見事な彫刻をほどこした銅のガーティで、きっかり24分で沈むようになっていた。つまり、インドでは24分が１時間だった。 １日は24分時の60時間からなり、１分の長さは今と変わらない。——『時間の図鑑』 170ページから引用　Uploaded to YouTube by Dorling Kindersley on 13 Nov 2009.

プラトンは、こう主張した——時間は宇宙とともにつくりだされた自立した存在である。あらゆるものが１秒ないし１分ないし100年間動きを止め、変化することのない状態を続けたのち、改めて以前のように動きはじめたとしたら、それに気づく者は誰もいない。しかし、時間そのものは、その間（かん）も進みつづけている。時間とは、事物や事象を入れることのできるからっぽの容器であり、この容器の中でこそ事物・事象は動くことができるのだ。

アリストテレスはプラトンの考えに異を唱え、時間とは、星々や水時計を見ても明らかなとおり、変化と運動にかかわるものであり、したがって、万物が動きを止めるようなことがあったら、時間もまた止まると主張した。時間が事象から独立して存在することはない、つまり、変化のない時間は意味がない——とアリストテレスは述べている。

Plato [Omission] asserted that time had been created along with the universe, and has an independent existence. If everything were to freeze and remain unchanged and unmoving for a second, a minute, or a hundred years, and then carry on as before, no one would notice--but time would have moved on. Plato thought of time as an empty container that could be filled with objects and events, and through which they can move.

Aristotle disagreed with Plato, and asserted that time is all about change and movement - obvious in stars and the water-clocks they used - and therefore that if everything were to freeze then time would stop too. Time, he said, does not exist independently of events, which means that time without change is meaningless.
