■はじめに Introduction

ピーター・スピアー (1927-  ) はオランダ生まれのアメリカ人イラストレーター、絵本作家。姓はスピアと表記されることもある。People は彼が1980年に発表した絵本。邦題は 『せかいのひとびと』。

　いろいろな　かたちの　はな。
　顔、口、耳……みんな　ちがう。

　かみの毛も　まっ白から　まっ黒まで　色が　あるし……あと　まっすぐなのや　ちぢれているのや。かみが　ぜんぜん　ない人も　たくさん　いるしね。

　人間って　おもしろいね。パーマを　かけたがったり　まっすぐな　かみに　したがったり。

　　And noses come in every shape imaginable.
　　So do faces, and ears . . . and everything else!

　　Think of our hair: from snow white to pitch black . . . straight, curly, kinky, and wavy. And a lot of people have no hair at all!

　　People are funny: Some with straight hair want theirs to be wavy, and others with little curls want theirs straight.

　およそ70おくの　人間……わかい人や　年とった人　病気の人や　元気な人、しあわせな人や　不しあわせな人　しんせつな人や　不しんせつな人、強い人や　弱い人

　人びとは　どこにでも　住んでいる。
　そして　みんなが　それぞれに　ちがっている。
