Translation into Russian
Translated by А.

Translation into Croatian (fragment)
Sopa de ñame (also known as Gachas de ñame)
in Rashomon y otros cuentos by Ryunosuke Akutagawa

A man sometimes devotes his life to a desire which he is not sure will ever be fulfilled. Those who laugh at this folly are, after all, no more than mere spectators of life.

Translation into English
"I loved thee long ere I saw thee, dear Romuald, and sought thee everywhere. Thou wast my dream, and I first saw thee in the church at the fatal moment. I said at once, 'It is he!' I gave thee a look into which I threw all the love I ever had, all the love I now have, all the love I shall ever have for thee—a look that would have damned a cardinal or brought a king to his knees at my feet in view of all his court. Thou remainedst unmoved, preferring thy God to me! (....)"

Tu restas impassible et tu me préféras ton Dieu. (...) »

Then suddenly--who knows from where--an old man with one bad eye appeared in front of Toshishun. Standing against the setting sun, he threw an enormous shadow on the gate. He looked down into Toshishun's face and said, "What are you thinking?"
Toshishun replied, "Me? Since I don't have any place to sleep tonight, I was wondering what I should do." The old man's question had caught Toshishun by surprise, and so he had given a straight answer without thinking.
"Is that so? That's too bad," The old man said. And then, after thinking for a second, he pointed at the setting sun and spoke again. "Let me tell you something good. Stand in the setting sun so that you throw a shadow on the ground. At the place where the shadow of your head falls, dig a hole in the shadow of your head falls, dig a hole in the dark of night. You will find enough gold there to fill a cart."
Toshishun was surprised and said, "Is that true?" But when he looked up, the old man had disappeared. [Omission]
On that day Toshishun became the richeset man in all of Luoyang. It had happened just as the old man had said. In the dark of night, he had dug a hole where the shadow of his head had fallen in the setting sun, and he had found enough gold to fill a cart.

(E1) Rubin, 2006 That is true, Your Honor. I am the one who found the body. I went out as usual this morning to cut cedar in the hills behind my place. The body was in a bamboo grove on the other side of the mountain. Its exact location? A few hundred yards off the Yamashina post road. A deserted place where a few scrub cedar trees are mixed in with the bamboo.

(E2) Kojima, 1952 Yes, sir. Certainly, it was I who found the body. This morning, as usual, I went to cut my daily quota of cedars, when I found the body in a grove in a hollow in the mountains. The exact location? About 150 meters off the Yamashina stage road. It's an out-of-the-way grove of bamboo and cedars.
